Part IV: What’s Next for the World and for You
Part IV of the course turns from analysis to action. Having examined in Part III the capacities that societies need in order to pursue sustainability, we ask here what individual actors can actually do, from wherever they sit, to help build and maintain those capacities and take concrete action in pursuit of sustainability. We focus on: i) envisioning sustainable futures and identifying the leverage points at which purposeful intervention can move development pathways toward them; ii) choosing policy instruments that build capacities for sustainability, and writing policy analysis in ways that decision-makers can act on; and iii) the qualities of leadership (empathy, systems thinking, adaptiveness, and patient persistence) that have proven especially effective at achieving progress on the ground.
