This workshop, held from 20-23 May 2002 at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City, was organized by the Initiative on Science and Technology for Sustainability, the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and the International Council for Science (ICSU). It sought to synthesize results from a number of related efforts addressing science, technology and sustainability that have been conducted over the last two years by the organizations listed above, the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues, and other organizations. It aimed to: (1) articulate the case for why it is both important and urgent for decision makers to address sustainable development and recognize the partially unrealized potential contribution that science and technology could contribute; (2) articulate a shared vision of goals for harnessing science and technology to sustainable development, relevant to but reaching beyond the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD); (3) propose general strategies and specific priority activities for achieving those goals, not only through the World Summit on Sustainable Development, but also reaching beyond to actions that enable sustainable development; and (4) specify a set of targets for 2005 and 2015 against which to evaluate progress in implementing our strategies and achieving our goals. Workshop sessions addressed three major areas: development-defined priorities for science and technology needed to advance sustainable development, science-defined priorities for fundamental research and innovation needed to respond to the immediate and future needs of the development community, and institutional needs for implementing the agenda described above.
