Location: VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands Source: General The applicant will be based in the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis at the IVM (EPA). This is a vibrant international group of about thirty researchers, faculty members and PhD students. The group leads the institute's effort in the analysis of policies, institutions and governance mechanisms in the field of sustainable development. We study existing systems of governance, but also explore new forms of governance that may better secure a transition to sustainable production and consumption. Overall, the department aims to be one of the leading international research teams working on sustainability governance. In the 2007 national research evaluation 'Environmental Sciences', the EPA department was evaluated as the top research department in the Netherlands, and 'internationally at the forefront'.
Tasks The research fellow is expected to contribute to one of our ongoing research projects for half of their time, and can work freely on their own research agenda for the other half. The research project in question is the European Union-funded research project LiveDiverse (www.livediverse.eu). Within this project, IVM is responsible for the work on socio-economic vulnerability, which includes research on strategies that local communities can use to affect decision making at higher jurisdictional levels. The LiveDiverse project focuses on areas with high biodiversity values in four countries: South Africa, India , Costa Rica and Vietnam. The research fellow will be asked to do empirical research in two of these countries, in coordination with our local partners and several of our master students. The fellow will analyze how local communities manage to organize and subsequently protect their livelihood from external disturbances by influencing national and international decision processes. The job will involve short field trips (4-6 weeks) to India and Vietnam, during which stakeholders and policy makers need to be interviewed. The work results in two case study reports that will be presented to the LiveDiverse consortium meeting in 2011.
